Getting started with WAP
December Issue
Roxanne "The Expert" Singleton

So here goes, my first question is about getting started on WAP applications.

You want to know: How do you get started? Why should I get started?

Those are great questions. I am excited about WAP2 and what it has to offer - sure I was sucked into the promise of WAP and that proved to be mostly a bust - but the good news is WAP2 actually delivers. It gives you a wide range of technologies that you can leverage if you are building mobile applications. It includes everything from XHTML to CSS to Push Messaging.

The advanced features in the spec for the markup language let you take advantage of the latest handsets by giving you more control over the user interface and information layout that simply was not possible using WML. WAP2 is the right technology for anyone looking to expand their practice to include cutting edge wireless applications including one-click access to applications and content associated with alerts, innovative multi-user games and messaging applications. You need to check it out.

To help you get started building WAP Push apps, Openwave has put together a WAP Push Library. It lets you take full advantage of the rich features of the spec without getting into the nitty-gritty of implementing the Push Access Protocol specifications themselves. And the GUI-based PushIT tool will let you quickly learn about and test the different types of push messages and PAP parameters.

If you are ready to get started, check out our WAP Push Quick Start Tutorial.

And here's the kicker. The latest generation of phones are arriving on the market, they are WAP2 compatible and are begging for content and sites that take advantage of WAP2. The carriers are motivated as well and are looking for hot WAP2 content.

So that's it. If you build something cool, worthy of publicizing, send it in to the Openwave Mobile Application Directory. There's a chance your application could be featured in an upcoming Application Showcase and at the very least, you get a free world wide listing for your effort.

Write me.
