Developer Scoop from CTIA

December Issue
Roxanne "The Expert" Singleton

While the fall CTIA Wireless IT show in San Francisco last month didn't have the scale of it's big brother in the springtime, it was a good show with lots of energy and giveaways (although I don't know what I am going to do with yet another coffee cup). For developers, there were a couple of interesting developments that come out of the conference.

Among the smattering of new devices that you will find on a store shelf near you this holiday season, are a number of phones sporting the Openwave V7 browser, including the Motorola i860 (now shipping at Nextel), the Siemens CX66 (the U.S. version of the Siemens 65 series), and the NEC 232. Also on display was the waaay cool Kyocera Koi with it's innovative swivel design along with the 6.2.3 Mobile Browser - a new "twist" on mobile phones (okay, bad pun but it is pretty darn cool!).

With the momentum building on V7, I want to remind you that the preview version of the V7 SDK is available on our web site. We've updated the site to provide you with a lot of information about V7. A good place to start is the Phone Simulator page (http://developer.openwave.com/dvl/tools_and_sdk/openwave_mobile_sdk/phone_simulator/index.htm). Watch for the final release of the V7 SDK early next year. Now back to the show.

In addition to the devices on the floor, there was a remarkable buzz surrounding Premium SMS here in The States. While this is nothing new for the rest of the world, for those of us in the U.S, Premium SMS provides a simple way for charges to appear on an end-user's monthly bill, even if a service is request from outside the operators' immediate sphere of influence. This opens the door for content owners to market, deliver, and get paid for their applications without having sell their first child to the business development group at every operator.

As the year comes to a close, I am excited to see Openwave continue to enhance the Developer web site, adding tools to help you develop and market your applications. If you have ideas about what else we could be doing, let me know.
