Jack's Hack for the month of June, 2002:

Cache Management and the Openwave Mobile Browser

This month's Jack's Hack looks into a HDML application in the Technical Library that demostrate the behavior of the Openwave Mobile Browser cache. The HDML application has been converted into WML and Perl is still the language.

The applications below shows different methods of controlling the Openwave browser cache. The cacheOp method requires the use of Digest. The Openwave browser accept Digest with the content type of "application/vnd.wap.multipart.mixed". With a digest, you can send more than one file at a time. This is a good method in certain cases where it needs strict cache control. It can also be used to send bitmap and Notification.  In this particular example we use the Digest Perl library that comes with the Openwave SDK 4.1.

Tips: Converting from HDML to WML.
The Openwave Mobile Browser 4.x uses WML internally. The browser translates HDML to WML in order to display the contents. If you have a HDML page to convert, you can use the Openwave SDK 4.1 and press F5 (Source) to see the WML equivalent. The translated contents could use more tags than does but it will give you a good frame work to work from. Please make sure the SDK is connected to a gateway and not in HTTP Direct mode.
