Download Fun

Q: How does Download Fun work?
A:  Download Fun requires both a client in the device as well as a Download Fun server. The Openwave Download Fun Server, which is operated by a Communication Service Provider, provides the mechanism to download binary objects from a content site to a mobile device in a secure manner. The Download Fun client in the device works alongside the WAP browser. Users can navigate to a WAP site that offers downloadable content and select an object for download. Once the user selects content to be downloaded, the download client and the Download Fun server manage all aspects of the download. This includes not only ensuring adequate space in the device to store the object, but also ensuring that there object is supported by the device. Download Fun supports both network initiated and subscriber initiated downloads and logs all events for subscriber billing and 3rd party revenue sharing agreements. Additionally, the content provider is notified of success or failure of an object download.

Q: What can I download using Download Fun?
A:  Any file, any size so long as the phone is capable of supporting that object, and it is properly configured with the server. Some of the commonly supported downloadable object types include ringtones, wallpapers, pictures, games, Java® objects, screensavers, audio and video files and skins. The actual format of the content for object types that are downloadable will vary from device to device. For example, some devices will support MIDI ringtones, while others might support WAV ringtones. Also, a device may support MP3 as a content type for an audio object, but only MIDI for a ringtone object

Q: How do I find out which phones support Download Fun?
A:  The Openwave Mobile Browser version 4.1.23 and above contains support for the Download Fun client. Device manufacturers need to implement the Download Fun client. A complete list of devices which contain support for Download fun will soon be included as part of our Supported Phones page as the phones become available.

Q: How do I know what object/media types a device supports?
A:  The HTTP_ACCEPT header of a device will contain the content format descriptor of all the object types supported by the device. This HTTP header is delivered with every request that a device makes to a WAP site. The content format descriptor includes the object type, MIME format, maximum object size in bytes, and any additional descriptors. The general format descriptor is as follows: application/x-mmc.object_type;content-type=format;size=n;other=y
For example:
application/x-mmc.ringtone;content-type=audio/wav;size=1024
application/x-mmc.wallpaper;content-type=img/bmp;size=512;color=256

Q: What do I need to do to develop a Download Fun Service?
A:  Creating your own Download Fun service will require you to:
1) Develop a website to serve downloadable content to mobile handset users, specifically tailored to the mobile handset's capability. This means presenting a WML based list of objects for a user to select from.
2) Use the Openwave SDK v5.0 to test the website. The v5.0 simulator simulates the functionality of the download fun client in the browser.
3) Get your website and the downloadable content approved for download by the communication service provider, and enter into a revenue sharing agreement. Fill out the feedback form for more information.

Q: How does Download Fun relate to the new GSM Association's M-Services initiative?
A:  A key component of delivering M-Services is the Download Fun technology. To learn more about the M-Services initiative and how it relates to Download Fun, visit our online newsletter WML Pulse Europe , which is featuring M-Services in a special edition.

Q: When will Download Fun be available?
A:  Download Fun has already rolled out in Hong Kong at wireless carrier Hutchison Telecom. The server and handset software is already in production. Communication service providers around the world will be announcing their Download Fun roll-out plans soon, along with their device manufacturer partners. No fewer than ten new handset models are expected to be released in time to meet the 2001 Holiday Season rush. The infrastructure for developers is in place and ready for you to use today. Please complete our feedback form, and an Openwave Developer Marketing representative will contact you to help get you started

Q: How can I find out more information?
A:  If you are interested in developing content for Download Fun, download the Openwave SDK WAP Edition 5.0. Included with this is a complete developer guide for building Download Fun applications. Openwave and their customers are recruiting "FUN" now, and Openwave is actively seeking developers and content partners who have or can create "cool" downloadable objects including ring-tones, wallpaper, logos and screensavers. Be advised that you MUST either own the rights, or have redistribution privileges to any content that you are going to make available via Download Fun.
