Phone Simulator 7.0 Release Notes

Contents

Openwave® Phone Simulator 7.0, Version 7.0.107, is a Windows-based application that you can use to test how your wireless applications work with Openwave Mobile Browser 7.0. The simulator includes the same browser, messaging, and other Openwave application code that is embedded in real mobile phones.

This release of the Phone Simulator includes a configuration file, or "skin," for an idealized, generic mobile phone. For more information about this skin, please see "About the Openwave Generic Configuration File."

The Openwave Mobile Browser included with this release of the simulator is version 7.0.107.

The version of Openwave Mobile Browser 7.0 included with this simulator can display content delivered in a number of formats, including XHTML Mobile Profile 1.0 (XHTML-MP) with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and Wireless Markup Language (WML).

Important: There are practical limits to how perfectly a Windows-based application can simulate a real mobile phone. For example, the Windows-based simulator relies on Windows fonts and type-handling code, whereas real phones use their own fonts and code. It's a good idea to obtain details about the features of mobile phones in your markets before you design your applications. And it's essential that after you develop and test your wireless applications using a simulator, you then test your applications on the actual phones and networks where they will be deployed.

For more information about the Openwave Mobile Browser and for a broad range of other information about developing content for Openwave products, visit the Openwave Developer Network Web site. Installing the Simulator

You can install the simulator on any computer running:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later
  • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or later

To install Openwave Phone Simulator 7.0: Double-click its installer package and follow the on-screen instructions.

Openwave Phone Simulator 7.0 is configured to connect via a public, Openwave-hosted WAP gateway, which performs DNS lookup for the simulator. You can also configure the simulator to connect via a free software package called Apache, which includes an HTTP proxy.

The first time you start the simulator after you install it, the simulator sends your IP address and simulator version to Openwave to register the successful installation.

Using the Openwave Developer Network MMSC

Openwave Phone Simulator 7.0 includes messaging software you can use to send and receive messages in Multimedia Message Service (MMS) and other formats. However, to exchange messages, you must register, or "provision," your copy of the simulator to communicate with servers that transmit the messages over the Internet, store and route messages to you, alert you that you have new messages, and so on.

The Openwave Developer Network maintains an Openwave Mobile Access Gateware (MAG) and Openwave Mobile Message Service Center (MMSC) that you can use with the simulator to exchange messages. To learn how to provision your simulator to use the Openwvae MAG and MMSC, follow these instructions on the Openwave Developer Network.

Using the Simulator

Once you have the Openwave simulator installed, you can choose Windows' Start > Programs > Openwave V7 Simulator Preview > Openwave V7 Simulator Preview command to start the simulator.

When you start the simulator, two windows open: The console window and the simulator window. The console window displays a wide variety of information about how the browser is running, including debugging information, which you can obtain with the commands in the Debug menu. The simulator window presents an image of a mobile phone, with the Openwave Mobile Browser running on it.

Important: It is possible to discover other commands you can enter in the console window to control and configure the browser and the simulator application. However, these commands have not been tested for general use, and may do irreparable damage to the configuration of the simulator, requiring you to uninstall and reinstall the simulator from scratch in order to continue using it.

You can navigate to a URL by entering it in the Go bar at the top of the simulator window.

Click the simulator's arrow keys, soft keys, alphanumeric keys, and other keys to navigate the web pages displayed in the simulator, enter text, and so on.

The information displayed in the console window is also written to a log file, named sim.log, which is stored in the same directory as the simulator application file. Each time you start the SDK, a new sim.log file is created, and the log file from the last session is renamed.

Important Changes since Phone Simulator Version 6:

  • Function keys no longer implement shortcuts to clear cache, alerts, cookies, history... Instead these functionalities and many others are now available as menu items under "Debug" in the Console window.
  • The Restart function has been modified. The client can be restarted by using the "Stop Client"/"Start Client" menu item under "Program" in the console window.
  • To switch configuration/change device please use the "Load Device" menu item under "File" in the console window. Phone Simulator only provides one single device but many can be added in the device directory.

Changing Settings

You can change how the console connects to the Internet by choosing the simulator window's Settings > Server Profiles command. The default profile connects to the WAP gateway hosted by Openwave Developer Support: devgate2.openwave.com. If you have another WAP or HTTP gateway available you wish to use, you can click New and enter the appropriate settings for your gateway.
